Wulf, My Wulf:
An anthology of wolf & werewolf folklore from Anglo-Saxon England, Viking Age Scandinavia, & Beyond

Edited by Joseph S. Hopkins, Danielle Cudmore, & Lauren E. Fountain

FOREWORD BY ROBERT EGGERS

“It is different for us”

Inspired by the script for Robert Eggers’s upcoming film Werwulf

Long ago, before their extermination, packs of wolves roamed the wilds of England and the people there both reviled and named their children after them, viewing them as vicious creatures to hate and hunt, and impressive beasts of battle worthy of invocation in verse and song.

Belief held that a man might even become a wolf, a werewolf, under the right (or wrong) circumstances. Beginning with the enigmatic and celebrated Old English poem Wulf and Eadwacer, this anthology presents a variety of literary and artistic depictions of wolves, werewolves, and wolf-headed warriors from what is now England, Scandinavia, and Germany. Wulf, My Wulf is a unique, scholarship-grounded, and art-filled work combining the efforts of numerous scholars to create a wolfish experience unlike any before it.

This beastly but elegant book is packed with original art, new translations of historical material, and discussion from noted experts. Contributors include Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Werwulf), John Lindow (Professor Emeritus, Scandinavian Studies, University of California, Berkeley), Leszek Gardeła (Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany), Giorgia Sottotetti (National Museum of Iceland), Ann Sheffield, Denise Vast, Lyonel Perabo, Kevin Alexandrowicz (Archaic Growth), Kári Pálsson, Anneke Wilder (Evergreen State College), Isabella Mazzanti, and more. Edited by Joseph S. Hopkins (Hyldyr), Danielle Cudmore (Halmstad University), and Lauren E. Fountain (Hyldyr).
