Aconitum, or Wolf’s-bane, is a highly toxic plant with complex hooded flowers. Its toxin is in the form of aconitine, which attacks the brain and heart, and are potentially fatal. Even touching the plant can result in chills, tingling, headaches, and nausea.
The ancient Greeks used Aconitum as a weapon, dipping spears and arrows in their poison as a method to ward off wolves. The three witches of Shakespeare’s Macbeth include Wolf’s-bane in their conjuring spell: “Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf.”
