Our talisman of protection, adorned with flora and fauna associated with protection: a raven, Solomon's seal, snapdragons, raspberries, a scorpion, datura, coral, and a single violet.
Ravens are among the most intelligent birds in Europe and North America. They use tools, solve complex problems, and even practice deception. Young ravens live in flocks before pairing off, building intricate social bonds not only with each other but sometimes with humans. Offer a raven food, and it may bring you a gift in return—often something shiny, sometimes even stolen jewelry.
They’re also uncanny mimics. Unlike parrots, whose chatter is playful, a raven’s voice can sound eerily human or mechanical, like words drifting from a broken speaker. If you hear a strange voice in the woods, it might not be human at all.
Perhaps it’s this intelligence and otherworldly presence that wove ravens into so many myths. The Greeks linked them to Apollo and prophecy; in Norse myth, Odin’s ravens flew the world to bring him knowledge. In medieval British and Irish tales, they haunted battlefields, sometimes as protectors. Across cultures, ravens stand as psychopomps—messengers straddling the line between life and death.
