Devoureth all mankynde.
Designed in collaboration with Werwulf. This line of greeting cards, notebooks, and prints accompanies Robert Eggers’ darkest film to date. We trawled through manuscripts to find the fitting images from a period with such sparse ornamentation. But if there is any company that can make stationery from hell, it’s us.
Hellmouths originate in Anglo-Saxon art depicting the entrance to hell as a gaping mouth of a violent beast. Popular scenes included Judgement Day and the Harrowing of Hell. The oldest known depiction of a Hellmouth is an ivory carving from 800 CE. In the apocalypse narrative of the Germanic tradition that preceded Christianity in Britain, the wolf Fenrir devours everything in his path including the sun. Art historian Meyer Schapiro theorizes that the motif may have developed by combining existing pagan iconography with Christian theology.
